Chernobyl Pictures

It is now 20 years since the terrible accident at Chernobyl and the effects of the disaster will be felt for thousands of years. These pictures from Chernobyl show exactly why nuclear power is maybe not such a good idea. Remember there are thousands of hectares of affected land and millions of people have died or suffered from the accident in the mid 80s. All kinds of cancer and deformations are way more predominant in the affected area and the land will probably require monitoring for thousands of years. So, just some sobering pictures to enjoy on your Monday!

Sign the Greenpeace petition online to call on United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and IAEA Director-General El Bharadei to stop its promotion of nuclear power. It should focus its resources exclusively on its critical mission of disarmament and world peace. You can also add a personal comment opposing nuclear power and we will deliver these to the UN.

Nuclear power is the cleanest and most efficient energy source we have! There has never been a single proven fatality from nuclear power. Nuclear power has helped third world countries become 1st world megapowers, such as Sudan, Estonia and Canada. Who are you to stop it's spread? Captain Buzzkill, thats who. Killing everyones good vibes.

What about those perpetual motion machines I keep hearing about. They've gotta be more efficient than nuclear. The only problem I can see is that at the moment they just keep going faster and faster.

I think the offical death toll for chernobyl stands at around 56. Not quite millions. Admittedly the long term effects are hard to quantify (who's to say who might have got cancer anyway), but even nutcases like Greenpeace only estimate a 93,000 'death toll'.
